The Mount Without Wedding Photographer: Lozzy & Reuben’s Dark & Moody October Wedding.

As a Mount Without wedding photographer, I still think about the rain on Lozzy & Reuben’s wedding day. It’s normally the sentence that makes a photographer’s stomach drop. But at The Mount Without, it barely registered. It’s still one of my favourite days of the year to talk about.

A Gothic, Candlelit Kind of Wedding.

Black tie. Candles glowing in every corner. A little bit gothic, but never tacky gothic. The Mount Without is one of the only venues in Bristol where the weather genuinely doesn’t matter. We got some of the most striking portraits of the year using nothing but the huge windows and the building’s moody natural light.

The ceremony was celebrant-led, run by the brilliant Polly Miller. It was one of the most personal ceremonies I’ve photographed. Reuben’s American, so the day turned into a US vs UK showdown — a relay pint race where nobody on either team could drink until the person before them had finished. The US won. It’s the kind of detail that makes a wedding feel like theirs, not a template. And it’s exactly the kind of moment I love being trusted to capture.

Small thing that made a big difference: Lozzy & Reuben came to view the room together before the day. Ten minutes of them just being in the space gave me some of the best portraits from the whole shoot. You don’t need a styled shoot to get photos worth printing. You need two people comfortable enough to stand in a room together.

Why The Mount Without Is One of Bristol’s Best Alternative Wedding Venues.

The Mount Without doesn’t feel like a wedding venue. It feels like you’ve been let into a museum after hours. High ceilings, huge windows, real history in the walls — it has presence before a single guest arrives.

For couples who want their wedding to feel atmospheric rather than staged, it’s one of the strongest choices in Bristol. It’s a big part of why I keep coming back as a Mount Without wedding photographer. The light is moody rather than bright. It suits a romantic, editorial, slightly dramatic look far better than a flat, bright marquee ever could. Add candlelight to that, and the room’s already doing half the work before the camera comes out.

Insider Tips for Getting Married at The Mount Without

A few things worth knowing from someone who’s actually shot in the space:

Ceremony room. This is the standout room in the building and where I’d always recommend having your ceremony. Once it finishes, the room gets turned around for dinner fast. You won’t get back in for portraits during the changeover. If you want photos in the ceremony room itself, we grab them the moment you’re married, before the turnaround starts.

The mezzanine. Upstairs, two huge windows let in gorgeous light, plus a set of cinema chairs that make for a genuinely cool spot. It also happens to be one of the best vantage points in the building for photographing both the ceremony and the dinner from above.

Timing. Aim for a ceremony between 12–2pm. The Mount Without doesn’t rely on daylight the way most venues do — it’s naturally quite dark. But that early-afternoon slot gives you the best of both worlds. You get enough natural light for portraits, and enough time for the candles to already be building atmosphere by evening.

Parking. Minimal parking at the venue itself. There’s a multi-storey nearby, but you’re right in the centre of Bristol. Most guests walk or grab a taxi — worth knowing if people are staying in the city either side of the wedding.

Getting ready. No getting-ready space on site, so you’ll need somewhere nearby. A few lovely Airbnbs around Berkeley Square work well. Hotel du Vin Bristol, right at the bottom of the Christmas Steps, is a great shout if you want more of a “hotel” feel to get ready in.
